University of Minnesota Juneteenth Celebration
Juneteenth is a celebration of abolition, Black freedom, Black joy, Black history, and Black futures. This year’s event was centered around disruption, reverberation, and amplification with its 2024 theme: We are the Noise-The Echoes of our Ancestors! The block party included a commemorative march, live performances, free food, Black vendors, giveaways, art-making, workshops, roller skating, and an interactive kids zone.
About the Organization
For the last 3 years, the University has supported this event. This event, and its impact, would not be possible without many of the staff and faculty members dedicated to celebrating community and providing resources for Black folks to celebrate in the ways we want and need. The planning and coordinating team was made of of Black faculty and staff as well as members of the community.
About the Design
Each year, we work with the planning team to develop the theme and visual identity for the event. This years theme was Bring the Noise. A celebration and call for Black folks to speak, sing, shout, and bring voice. It is a a reflection on the dreams, vision, and work of our ancestors as we continue to fight for liberation.
