The Selma to Montgomery march is one of the most identifiable campaigns of the Civil Rights Movement. The marches were organized by nonviolent activists. The first march was quelled through state violence, this event is referred to as Bloody Sunday. It wasn’t until the third attempt that marchers were able to complete the journey to Montgomery. This campaign helped pave the way for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
This series exists to honor prominent movements and campaigns throughout the modern civil rights era.
