The Freedom Riders were courageous activists who rode buses into the segregated south. Although segregation of the buses was illegal, Jim Crow refused to comply. Activists and riders received little help from the federal government. The Freedom Riders faced harassment, violence, and the threat of death, but they continued to ride for equality.
This series exists to honor prominent movements and campaigns throughout the modern civil rights era.
